Since the dawning of the videogaming era, different genres have emerged and yet failed to prove their true identitie. Resident Evil, Dead Space or even F.E.A.R have lost their horrorific side and became more like action games, however, Frictional Games has always put a lot of effort in creating the most tremendously scary games ever. Amnesia Dark Descent is a dark scary and frightning tale that will consume your most sane thoughts and submerge you into the most deepest darkness.
In Amnesia, you play as Daniel who wakens inside a huge and haunting caste with no memories of his past. As the game progresses, Daniel will find notes around the castle, apparently written by himself. He starts to regain some of his memories back and learns about that place and about his main goal: to kill Alexander, the owner of the castle. With this said, you’ll want to know more and more about the castle and the owner as well. Roaming around each floor, searching for more notes, while experiencing visions to help you follow the main plot of the game. The story is undoubtfully strong and adventuring yourself around every corner to get every last piece of paper will fill you up even more details about the plot, but, what really we really want to focus on is the horrifying environment and pursuit feeling.
The sounds are perfectly matched to give a more thrilling feeling. From scratches, footsteps to whispers and cries, everything will affect your state of mind and most importantly, do not cross the darkness. In Amnesia, you’ll Daniel to keep sane and alive. Subdueing the character in dark places will decrease his sanity, which in fact is a great “HitPoints mechanic” in this genre. Just like Project Zero (also known as Fatal Frame) you also use one single important item. In this case, its a oil lamp, used to lighten the darkest feeling around you and keeping you safe from harm. You can also find some tinderboxes around the castle and light some candles but you wanna use them carefully as you never know when you might run out of light.
Another strong factor on Amnesia is the amount of interesting riddles which some people might been used to from previous Frictional’s games. Solving them isn’t too difficult but some of them will force you to experience horrid environments like sewers and morgues or even torture chambers. Keeping yourself focused and a clear mind will help you every time.
The object manipulation is also really good to give the player a more sense of touching-and-feeling experience as you’ll use your controller to pull and grab objects by dragging your cursor back and forth to open drawers or doors. This is kind of mechanic is used to let yourself into the skin of Daniel and give a stronger feeling of realism, strengthening the horror factor.
To the date, Amnesia The Dark Descent sets its place as one of the scariest games ever and should be played with the lights off and headphones on. Well, at least dim the lights to avoid injuring your eyes although I don’t believe you’ll play long straight sessions. Without pointing out any bad factors, Amnesia is (if not perfect) nearly to be one of the best games ever, promising 100% frightning atmosphere and environment. Good luck!
