From Infinity Ward, the most anticipated game of the year referred simply as Modern Warfare 2, promises to bring back all the action and the amazing battlefield experience back from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
There are many facts to point out from Modern Warfare 2, but being the game which you have waited for so long that even made you camp in front of the store in the release day, I guess you won’t even read to what I’m posting… Oh wait, I think I shouldn’t even bother reviewing it should i?
Modern Warfare 2 takes five years after Call of Duty 4 and the Ultranationalists seize control of the entire Russia, declaring Zakhaev a hero for his previous acts. Similar to various installments of the Call of Duty series, the player takes control of different characters, representing different squads and divisions, as they battle through a massive state of chaos across the world.
The player assumes the role of Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson, under the superior officer Sergeant “Soap” MacTavish in an elite, multinational commando unit known as 141 Task Force and Private James Ramirez, a member of the 1st Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment stationed in the United States, protecting their homeland during the Russian invasion.
The most shocking scene of the entire game, and it certainly caused a big ruckus due to its unpolitical actions it shows, when you’re sent undercover among Makarov’s men who invade the national airport of Russia and go on a frenzy killing spree, slaughtering every single civillian in an act of terrorism to set up the American government.
Spec Ops is a cooperative mode, which can also be played in solo, and consists in several independant missions. These missions take place in several locations from the campaign mode and a friend can participate in them with you, local or online and it includes modes such as shoot practicing, surviving waves of incoming russian soldiers and racing in snowmobiles till the finish line. Its really entertaining and brings a Gears of War 2 flavour to the game, setting up a couple of challenges tunning up your gaming skills.
Modern Warfare 2 feels like a real action movie! With Hans Zimmer as the main responsable for the entire sountrack, every situation of the game gives a movie-ish feeling across the spine wether its fast paced moment with heavy drums echoing through the scenario or a sweet balad as the world is destroyed by this magnificent score. Running down the flavelas as a bunch of crazy brazillians run after you and jump onto a moving helicopter and the action doesn’t stop there! Not even James Bond or Ethan Hunt would go through as much as action as “Soap” or Captain Price go.
Character modeling was really improved and this time they really meant business. Every character as a little bit more of personality and expression and the interaction with the scenario and all the characters brings a new aspect to the Call of Duty series.
The scenarios are outstanding and incredibly amazing. Travelling across the world, the player will be sent to freezing and snowy mountains and even to the outerspace. The crowded favelas of Brazil and the almost post-apocalyptic environments of the United States of America, with destroyed gun ships and buildings to replenish the right feeling of Modern Warfare. I don’t remember watching so many destroyed helicopters, burning on the ground and trecnhes in front of the White House. I guess this really means war.
Host migration! Hell yeah. Finnaly, I stopped hearing all the boo-ing from when the server host leaves a match on and on. This time, Modern Warfare 2 won’t let the game disconnect and keep the action going on as much as it can!
Good thing to keep in mind if you’re new to Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer is that, you don’t want to give up that easily. The multiplayer mode is full of random bullets and spammed grenades, not to mention, the amount of incoming Predator missiles and AC-130 raids. If so, there’s always the private match option which is freely customizable easily accessed.
Many things happened since Call of Duty 4. Not only Dedicated Servers were removed from the PC version after Infinity Ward implementing the new matchmaking system through IWNET through Steam but Xbox 360 players will now not have access to the party chat during online play.
Gameplay hasn’t improved that much apart from new features like a vast amount of machinery, actions, vechicles, streaks kills and awards as I’ll explain later. During the single-player’s campaign you’ll uncover most of the weapons of the entire game. There’s even an “epilogue” just like in Call of Duty 4, except there ain’t any primary objective. Its a simple museum to show-off part of the scenaries along the campaign, characters and weapons.
The multiplayer keeps the same experience and points system, unlockable rewards and challenges and the same game modes: Free-For-All, Search & Destroy, Demolition, Domination, Team Deathmatch, and Capture The Flag. However, it adds two new features. One of them, is the 15 different kill streaks awards. From turning a UAV radar online to calling for a AC-130 gunship, you’ll be able to equip only 3 of them according to your preferences.
